How to Make a Holiday Wreath with Loofah Slices

Holiday wreath decorated with natural loofah slices, pinecones, red berries and a plaid bow, alongside loofah ornaments

Turn natural loofah slices into a festive wreath with evergreen greenery, pinecones, red berries, and a generous plaid bow. The loofah’s cream color and open texture add a handcrafted touch without needing paint.

Materials

  • One 12–14-inch evergreen wreath base. Choose artificial greenery for a reusable wreath.
  • Approximately 8–12 CraftLoof™ loofah slices in assorted sizes.
  • 5–7 small, clean, dry pinecones.
  • Several artificial red-berry sprigs.
  • Approximately 3 yards of 2–2½-inch-wide wired plaid ribbon.
  • Green floral wire, wire cutters, and scissors.
  • Optional: a low-temperature hot-glue gun for securing small accents.

Safety note: Use care with wire cutters and hot glue. Keep the finished wreath away from candles, fireplaces, and other heat sources.

1. Prepare the loofah slices

Remove seeds and loose fibers. Use the slices flattened, or wet them to expand, gently reshape, and allow them to dry completely before decorating. Select a mixture of larger and smaller slices for a natural arrangement.

2. Arrange the design

Lay the wreath flat. Position the loofah slices around the evergreen ring, leaving the center open and some greenery showing between slices.

Place larger slices first, then fill selected gaps with smaller ones. Leave room at the top for the bow. Arrange everything before attaching it.

3. Secure the loofah

Thread floral wire through sturdy sections of each slice in two places. Fasten the wire around the wreath’s underlying frame or substantial branches.

Tighten gently so each slice stays in place without crushing or cutting through the fibers. Tuck wire ends into the back.

4. Add pinecones and berries

Wrap wire around the base of each pinecone, catching it beneath the scales, and secure it to the wreath frame.

Distribute berry sprigs between the loofah slices and pinecones. Wire their stems to the frame, keeping the loofah visible. Small dabs of low-temperature hot glue can help hold lightweight accents in position.

5. Make the plaid bow

Leave a ribbon tail approximately 10–12 inches long. Form two loops on each side, pinching the ribbon together at the center. Leave a second tail and secure the pinched center tightly with floral wire.

Wrap a short piece of ribbon around the center to conceal the wire. Fluff the loops, trim the tails, and wire the bow to the top of the wreath.

6. Finish and hang

Add a sturdy hanging loop to the wreath frame. Lift the wreath upright and check that every decoration stays secure. Adjust the greenery and ribbon, and tuck away exposed wire ends.

Display indoors or in a sheltered, dry location. Store in a roomy wreath box to protect the loofah slices and bow.

To get the pictured look

Keep the loofah its natural cream color, use red berries sparingly, and let the large plaid bow provide the main splash of color. This tutorial covers the wreath shown in the photo; the separate hanging ornaments are additional project ideas.
